Elosy is grateful for the things she has. Having grown up in poverty in the remote Zolote village, she does not take for granted the little comfort that her job as a TSC-employed graduate teacher affords her. In fact, today she is sitting at Walan Retreat Centre, the best meat joint in the county, enjoying a platter of roast meat.
But the fact that she is alone exposes the one part of her life that is unfulfilled-romance. Her friends are all with their lovers in various places while she is here, alone.
She has a boyfriend, Danny, who is also the father of her daughter. But for years now Danny only visits her only once a month, stays for a night then disappears for another month. He lives in Mombasa, but he doesn’t allow her to visit her. As she is enjoying her solitude and meat, her life is turned upside down when she sees Danny’s wedding photos on Facebook. All along she had hoped he would come to his senses, remember the good times they had before she got pregnant and marry her.
As she cries on her way to her house, Charles, a male colleague, offers to walk her there because she is clearly distraught. He takes her to her house, but when they get there, he turns against her and demands that she offers her body to him.
Elosy’s encounter with Charles is the genesis of a long nightmare that threatens to strip her of everything-her freedom, her dignity, her job and even her life.
